The engine keeps turning while our manual car waits. Must the wheels turn too? Not if the drive path is interrupted. The clutch is a controllable coupling between the engine and transmission. Let’s follow a simplified dry friction clutch, rather than every possible clutch design.
In this video: follow a simplified dry single-plate clutch in a 3D cutaway. See the flywheel, friction disc, pressure plate, spring and release bearing; watch the spring clamp the disc so the two sides turn together, see how pressing the pedal releases that clamp, watch the surfaces briefly slip as the clutch re-engages, learn why neutral is a different break from an open clutch, and make a prediction: does pedal down clamp the disc harder, or release it?
A simple visual explanation for absolute beginners, from Make Learning Fun Again. Part of How Your Vehicle Works — From Zero, from Make Learning Fun Again. The Fun is in finding out.
Next in the learning path: Manual vs Automatic: Who Changes the Gears?
Honest labels: this is a simplified dry single-plate clutch, one design among many, not to scale; travel, gaps, speeds, heat colour and the heat graph are illustrative and no measurements are shown. The car is generic and unbranded; vehicle designs vary. The automatic examples are separate and simplified. Conceptual illustrations only: this is an explanation, not a driving or repair tutorial. The narration is a synthetic voice.

A question to chase: When a car changes gears by itself, what has taken over? What would you like to understand about vehicles next?
