In this episode, we travel to Cormorant Island and Alert Bay, located in the traditional territory of the ’Namgis First Nation. Known as the Home of the Killer Whale, this remarkable island is rich in Indigenous culture, coastal history, and wild West Coast scenery. 🚢 Arriving in Alert Bay Our journey begins with the ferry ride to Alert Bay, a historic coastal village once centered around the salmon fishery. From weathered net sheds and outbuildings to the working marina, the shoreline tells the story of generations who have lived and worked along these waters. 🐋 Home of the Killer Whale Alert Bay holds deep cultural and spiritual significance as the Home of the Killer Whale (Orca). Here, land and sea are inseparable, and the presence of the orca is woven into the traditions, stories, and artwork of the ’Namgis people. Totem poles throughout the village share these ancient teachings and legends. ⚰️ ’Namgis Burial Grounds We respectfully visit the ’Namgis Burial Grounds, a sacred place I’ve wanted to see for over a decade. Generations of ancestors rest here, memorialized by beautifully carved totem poles that serve as grave markers and reminders of enduring connection to the land. 🌲 Alert Bay Ecological Reserve Just steps from our campsite, we explore the Alert Bay Ecological Reserve, a peaceful forest of moss-covered trails, native plants, and wildlife. Once affected by wildfire, this area now stands as a powerful example of resilience and natural renewal. 🪶 World’s Tallest Totem Pole & ’Namgis Big House We finish our journey at the world’s tallest totem pole and the ’Namgis Big House (Longhouse) — powerful symbols of culture, strength, and living tradition that make Alert Bay one of the most meaningful places in British Columbia.
