If you ever spent a whole Saturday at the mall with no money and still had the time of your life, you've probably wondered where all those stores went. I'm Vincent Thomas. I'm 74, I'm from Allentown, Pennsylvania, I saw my first enclosed mall when I was 14, and I spent 40 years walking through them as a traveling salesman. So let's take one more walk together, store by store, and I'll tell you what happened to every one of them.
In this video:
Sears and Montgomery Ward, the anchor stores, and the Christmas story Wards gave away to children
My first job at Woolworth's at 15, and how the five-and-dime became Foot Locker
Kinney Shoes, Waldenbooks and B. Dalton
Hot Sam pretzels and Aladdin's Castle arcade
A Christmas Eve at KB Toys I'll never forget
Camelot Music, Sam Goody, Chess King and Merry-Go-Round
Casual Corner, Lechters and Hess's of Allentown
Why so many malls died, and the fountain I went looking for last spring
No gimmicks and no made-up drama. Just a real walk through the mall from somebody who was there, with the facts checked.
What was the name of your mall, and which store did I leave out? Tell me in the comments. I go through every one.
