In Episode 29 of Genie Talks, Genie sits down with her friend of over a decade, Carl Lafrenais, a voice that goes beyond the headlines. Carl is a singer, RJ and content creator from Fort Kochi who was once the voice behind “Music Mojo” on Club FM and the frontman of Dash and the Red Mafia in Dubai. After 12 years abroad, he is now back home in Kerala.
This conversation moves from the stage to the streets. Carl talks about opening for Bon Jovi in front of 30,000 people, the highs of his years in Dubai, and why he gave it all up to be close to his parents. He shares the story behind his new EP, 6820001, an ode to his hometown, and plays a little of “You’re My Groove” live. He also talks about writing his first song at 15 and why music is his higher power.
Carl also opens up about reporting from the ground at the Delhi protest, why he believes everyone is political whether they like it or not, and how he deals with hate in his DMs. They discuss fact-checking WhatsApp forwards, trusting independent journalists, and having these conversations with family who see a very different feed. Along the way there are plenty of lighter moments, including a mother who announces every day that she is never talking to him again.
It’s honest, funny and thought-provoking, and a conversation worth watching till the end.
