In 1942 the Army's ration lab handed soldiers a folding can opener, and more than eighty years later that P-38 is still one of the best military EDC tools you can put on a keyring for a few bucks. This video runs through ten military everyday carry tools you can still buy today for under $20 each, in the order the military got them, for people who carry daily in the city and like gear with a service record behind it. Some of these are the exact pattern soldiers carried, like the P-38 and P-51 and the GS/FRP-2 Nomex flight gloves. Others are the closest version you can still buy new. The TL-29 Signal Corps lineman's knife lives on in the Gardner Bender KF-200 electrician's knife, which is the same two-blade layout for about $18. Along the way there's the old soldier's "housewife" sewing kit, the Acme Thunderer from the Birmingham whistle maker that supplied British officers in the First World War, Rite in the Rain notebooks (built for loggers in 1916 before the military started buying a third of them), the Zippo and the real story of why it was never actually issued, Type III 550 paracord, and a signal mirror for the glovebox. Not every piece of old military EDC still wins. Potable Aqua shares its iodine chemistry with the military's 1952 Globaline tablet, but its own label says it hasn't been shown to kill Cryptosporidium, and the military now buys chlorine dioxide tablets instead. That's covered too, so you know what you're carrying. If you're building an urban EDC, adding a few pieces of military surplus EDC gear to your daily carry, or just curious which issued tools are still sold under $20, this one's for you. Carry smart, know what you're buying, and own gear that lasts. Which piece of military EDC is in your everyday carry, and how did it end up with you? Tell me in the comments.
