How the Capitol Accidentally Created the Mockingjay.

The mockingjay became the symbol of the rebellion that brought down President Snow. But the Capitol made it. It's what was left over when one of the Capitol's own spy projects went horribly wrong. In this Hunger Games lore explainer, The Lore Cabinet counts the Capitol's five mistakes. We start with the jabberjay, a spy bird built in a Capitol lab during the Dark Days, and the rebels who turned it against its makers. Then young Coriolanus Snow, Lucy Gray Baird and The Hanging Tree, the song he couldn't silence. Next comes the gold pin, and its history before Katniss: Maysilee Donner, Haymitch's ally in the Second Quarter Quell, and what Sunrise on the Reaping reveals about who made it. Last come the Capitol's attempts to crush the symbol, and the moment that mattered most.
