Every Country's Most Recent War: Can You Believe it?

🌍 Who did every country fight most recently? This map shows the most recent qualifying war or major armed conflict involving each of the world's 198 countries and entities. But what actually counts as a war? ⚔️ How is a war classified? For this map, a conflict generally qualifies when: It involves organized armed forces and sustained fighting, rather than an isolated incident, raid, or single military strike. The opposing side is a foreign state or state military force. A country is considered to have fought a conflict only when its own forces were directly involved in the fighting. Providing weapons, funding, intelligence, or other indirect support alone does not qualify. Major armed conflicts and military campaigns can qualify even if they were not formally declared as a “war.” Purely domestic conflicts against non-state groups are excluded unless there is a qualifying foreign-state opponent. Isolated border incidents, individual strikes, and other limited military actions that do not constitute a sustained conflict are generally excluded. For coalition wars involving multiple opponents, the map uses the most appropriate direct foreign opponent for that country. The year shown represents the end of actual fighting, rather than necessarily the date of a peace treaty or formal settlement. 🏛️ Historical conflicts Some countries' most recent qualifying conflict occurred decades or even centuries ago. Where appropriate, historical predecessor states and historical flags are used rather than automatically replacing them with their modern equivalents. This can produce some unusual-looking results on the map, particularly for countries whose most recent conflict involved a historical state. Countries with no qualifying conflict under these criteria are shown as N/A.
