Take a walk with me through the city centre of Kassel, Germany. I will be talking a short stroll down Untere Königsstrasse towards Friedrichsplatz, then head straight to the City Museum to research the WWII devastation that happened to this city.
During World War II, Kassel was heavily targeted because of its important military and industrial production. On the night of 22 October 1943, a massive Allied bombing raid devastated the city.
Around 80% of Kassel's buildings were destroyed, while approximately 97% of the historic old town, much of it made up of traditional half-timbered buildings, was more or less wiped out. Thousands of people also lost their lives.
After the war, Kassel was largely rebuilt in a modern, brutalist, "Plattenbau" style rather than recreated. This dramatically changed the character and appearance of the city that exists today.
Many people on Social Media call Kassel the ugliest city in Germany. Is it true?
Come along for a walking tour and decide for yourself.
