Chippewa Lake Park. For thirty-two years, there was a Ferris wheel standing in the woods of Medina County, Ohio, with a tree growing straight up through the middle of it. Not beside it. Through it. The park had closed after Labor Day weekend in 1978, and instead of dismantling the rides, whoever was responsible simply walked away and left them where they stood. The Ferris wheel. The kiddie boats, sinking slowly into leaf litter. A little wooden coaster called the Little Dipper, wrapped in saplings until the track looked like a trellis. The park had opened in 1878. It operated for a century. Then it sat there rotting for more than thirty years, which means Chippewa Lake Park spent almost a third of its existence as a corpse that nobody bothered to bury. And here's the part people forget. When the gates closed, the buildings were fine. The century-old ballroom survived the closure. What it didn't survive came later. Start with what the place actually was, because "abandoned amusement park" makes it sound like some roadside carnival.
