Episode 59 of the UK immigration discussion series, recorded live every Thursday on Panjab Radio with Surjit Singh Ghuman MBE and Gurpal Singh Oppal, and broadcast every Saturday on Panjab TV. In this episode, Surjit Singh Ghuman and Gurpal Singh Oppal discuss important UK immigration changes announced on 3 September 2026, including provisions taking effect from 8 October 2026. A major topic is the change to Part Suitability of the Immigration Rules, alongside measures concerning fee waivers, FLR applications, biometrics and attempts to misuse the application process. The hosts explain why applicants must take their biometric appointments seriously. Repeatedly changing applications or rebooking appointments does not provide an unlimited extension of time to complete biometrics. Failure to provide required biometrics can result in an application being treated as invalid. The programme also warns viewers about fake Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) and agents promising work permits or extensions. Never pay for a fake CoS or allow someone to submit applications on your behalf without understanding exactly what is being submitted. Another major discussion is the Government's proposed Earned Settlement system and plans that could increase the standard qualifying period for settlement from 5 years to 10 years. There has been significant debate over whether such changes should affect people already living and working in the UK. The programme discusses concerns about retrospective changes and why viewers should distinguish between Government proposals and Immigration Rules already in force. The episode also looks at international student immigration. Official figures show 383,455 Sponsored Study visas were granted in the year ending June 2026, 11% fewer than the previous year. Australia and Canada are also discussed as part of the wider international immigration picture. Importantly, Australia has not introduced a general ban on student dependants. Eligible partners and dependent children may still be included subject to the applicable Australian visa rules.
