Középkori német neve Wormser Joch/Wormser Pass volt, Bormio régi német neve, Worms után. Its southern ramp branches off from the southern approach of the Stelvio Pass (Passo Stelvio), while its northern ramp starts from the village of Santa Maria in Val Müstair. It's medieval German name was Wormser Joch or Wormser Pass, named after Worms, the old German name for Bormio. Before the construction of the Stelvio Pass, this was one of the most important trade and road links between Bormio and Zernez.
