The T-34 is remembered as a rugged, simple tank. Inside it sat a very different kind of machine: a twelve-cylinder diesel built with extensive use of aluminum alloy and precision fuel-injection equipment. Why did Soviet designers choose this demanding engine while so many other tanks ran on gasoline?
The familiar answer is that diesel was safer. But lower fuel volatility was only part of the decision. The V-2 combined substantial power, comparatively low engine weight, and useful fuel economy. Turning those advantages into reliable movement required clean air, proper lubrication, cooling, and factories capable of producing sophisticated machinery under wartime pressure.
Then engine shortages forced a surprising compromise: some T-34s went to war with gasoline engines.
📊 Inside this documentary:
• Why choosing diesel meant choosing an entire engine system
• What aluminum construction contributed to the V-2
• How fuel economy affected the supply chain behind the tank
• Why dust and precision injection equipment complicated ruggedness
• How wartime shortages put gasoline engines into some T-34s
• Why diesel did not make the tank fireproof or winterproof
The V-2’s story connects the engine compartment to evacuated factories, repair workshops, and the crews who depended on them. Its advantages mattered only when the whole system could keep the tank moving.
