The Real Reason Your Washing Machine Smells Musty (And It’s Not What You Think)

Washing machine smells musty even though you wipe the seal? Peel back the bottom lip of the rubber door seal and look inside. That is where the smell has been living. Most of us wipe the front of the seal, the part we can see. The mould and slime sit in the deep fold behind the lip, where water pools after every wash, and a cloth across the outside never reaches it. Add some lint and detergent residue for it to feed on, plus low-temperature eco washes that never get hot enough to loosen it, and it keeps coming back no matter how often you wipe. In this video I show you the plain fix: wipe out the fold, use a gentle oxygen bleach paste on stubborn spots, run one hot empty cycle, and clean the two other places nobody checks, the detergent drawer and the drain filter. A few things people ask. Cleaning tablets do work, some of them, but they only clean what the water reaches, and the water does not reach well into that fold, which is why the cloth comes first and the cycle second. Oxygen bleach always goes in on its own. Never mix it with vinegar, chlorine bleach or any other cleaner, keep a window open, and check your machine's manual first, because some brands advise against certain products. Have a top-loader?
