Every single day, lakhs of Hyderabadis pass through the bustling junction of Basheerbagh. But beneath the roaring traffic, busy government offices, and soaring commercial towers like the Babu Khan Estate, lies a ghost of the past. In this highly researched episode, the Deccan Voice Research Team uncovers the deeply tragic and beautiful story of Basheer Bagh Palace. Completed around 1880 by Nawab Sir Asman Jah Bahadur (who held the title Basheer-ud-Dowlah), this massive 12.4-acre garden estate was once one of the most magnificent palaces in India. Combining European elegance with classic Deccani architecture, it featured towering Corinthian columns, Belgian crystal chandeliers, Italian marble, and lush orchards that stretched towards the foothills of Naubat Pahar. We explore the friendly architectural rivalries of Hyderabad's nobles, the palace’s golden era hosting the 6th Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, and its final years serving as a sanctuary for Hindustani classical vocal legend Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, who passed away within these walls in 1968. Demolished by 1970 during rapid urban expansion, this palace is a powerful reminder of the heritage Hyderabad has lost.
