I bought an abandoned house where the calendar on the wall still says 2001 — and everything the owners left behind is still inside, exactly where they dropped it.
The people who lived here walked away and left the house with all their belongings still in it. Now I own it — and I'm opening the door for the first time to see what almost a quarter of a century of silence has preserved.
The very first thing in the hallway is a strange pair: a carpet beater hanging right next to a washcloth. No sink, no bathtub, not even a basin — so why were they hanging there together? Then a row of little bottles that look like perfume, until I open one and the smell hits me. Not perfume. Medicine.
Room by room the house starts talking. A world map folded inside a tall wardrobe — were the owners travellers? A washstand with the soap still sitting in it. A cracked stove I'm not sure I can ever light again. A cellar hatch cut straight into the floor of the living room. A leopard-print sofa, a kitten poster, and that 2001 calendar frozen on the wall.
And then the shed — where someone else lived entirely. Dishes with strange scorched brown edges, a bone-handled fork, a gilded spoon, Jack Daniel's glasses lined up in the cupboard, and the most beautiful thing in the whole house: a plate with an angel on it.
