Nelson Tiny Houses Presents: Wild School Bus Conversion

A filmmaker named Louisa came to us in early spring with an idea to create a converted school bus that would serve as both a home and a mobile workspace. Her goal was to drive this converted school bus to remote areas in British Columbia and across the country, bringing the comforts of civilization with her as she worked. We were excited about this project and think it turned out well enough to share with you all. Here I am in the living room area of this converted school bus. Beside me is the couch, which converts into a bed. It’s not very wide, but the front slides out, and with an extra cushion, it doubles your sleeping space. There’s storage underneath as well, with room for Louisa’s filming equipment. A cool feature of this converted school bus is the hidden table behind the couch. It’s spring-loaded and can be pulled out to create a work surface big enough for two people. You’ll also notice this beautiful artwork inlaid on the wall of the converted school bus, done by a local artist. The LED strip lighting behind it really makes it pop, showing off the curve of the wooden ceiling. Another major feature in this converted school bus is the three skylights, which add a lot of natural light and a spacious feel. A small Hobbit stove is installed in the living room, and though the converted school bus has single-pane windows, we’ve added insulated curtains for extra warmth. The wooden ceiling, insulated floors, and walls should help keep the bus cozy in remote areas. Moving further back, we used birch for the countertops, which adds character and durability to the converted school bus kitchen. There’s plenty of storage, though we’re still waiting for Louisa to pick out the knobs. We’ve also installed a small washer and dryer in the corner of the converted school bus. The converted school bus kitchen has a fair bit of functionality, including a propane stove and extra prep space. There’s also a fair amount of metalwork, thanks to our metal fabricator, Duncan, who spent a lot of time in the converted school bus with us. Now we’re in the Converted school bus bathroom, where we’ve installed a Dickinson propane heater. This will keep the space warm and prevent the plumbing from freezing. The bathtub is actually an animal trough we found at a farm supply store. The composting toilet also features a pee diverter that’s connected to the grey water system. This heater is designed for sailboats but works beautifully in the bathroom. Now we move to the Converted school bus bathroom. There’s a queen-size bed, with storage underneath for water tanks and other items. There’s also a mechanical room where the on-demand water heater and fresh water tanks are stored. We’ve added even more storage in the bedroom of the bus, including a small desk for Louisa to use while she’s out in remote areas. There are USB outlets and 12-volt adapters throughout the converted school bus to keep her devices charged. For converted school bus trim we went with natural-looking rope, which really complements the interior of the converted bus. Though Louisa wanted a door for the bedroom, we settled on a curtain, which fits the vibe of the space. converted school bus Storage Now, let’s check out what Louisa calls the “garage” at the back of the converted school bus. It’s where all the solar power equipment will go. There’s already a roof rack built by Duncan, providing even more storage for the **converted school bus**. We’ve also installed extra exterior storage on the sides of the converted school bus, including compartments for propane tanks and electrical connections. This setup ensures the converted school bus is fully equipped for off-grid living. Here we are at the garage of the converted school bus. It’s insulated to keep the batteries and other equipment from getting too cold. There’s room for solar panels on the roof and additional mechanical systems, making this converted school bus self-sufficient for remote travel.
