At Tyrrell, Johnny Herbert was handed a drive as Jean Alesi turned his focus toward a Formula 3000 title bid instead. Qualifying followed the now-familiar McLaren-Honda script, with Ayrton Senna once again edging out teammate Alain Prost, this time by half a second, for what was becoming an almost routine front-row lockout. Gerhard Berger was the best of the rest for Ferrari, though still the better part of a second adrift, with Thierry Boutsen's Williams alongside him on row two. Further back, Riccardo Patrese and Nigel Mansell shared row three, while Alessandro Nannini, Stefano Modena, Mauricio Gugelmin and Derek Warwick rounded out the top ten. The real story of the weekend, however, centered on the weather. Spa's famously unpredictable microclimate threatened rain throughout, a prospect that stirred very different reactions in the paddock. Prost had long been uneasy about racing in wet conditions, while Senna, alongside Berger, Boutsen and Eddie Cheever, carried a reputation as one of the field's genuine rain specialists.
