I'm going mining! Well, sort of.
In this video, I'm recovering vintage solder from century-old silver-plated table knives after removing their stainless steel blades. Rather than throwing that metal away, I'm melting it down and casting small vintage solder bars.
Chapters:
00:00 - Removing the stainless steel blades
03:20 - Recovering the original solder
05:00 - Preparing the recovered metal
08:00 - Melting and pouring the solder
35:40 - The finished vintage solder bars
But I didn't stop there!
Each finished bar is individually numbered and stamped with our new Heritage Cottage Crafts maker's mark, giving these little pieces of reclaimed metal their own identity and history.
As a fan of the metal recovery and refining videos from @mbmmllc and the adventures at Cerro Gordo with @GhostTownLiving , I couldn't resist having a little fun recreating their metal-pouring operations on a much, MUCH smaller scale.
No silver mine, no ore crusher, and certainly no fortune in precious metals. Just an old craftsman finding another use for materials that might otherwise be discarded.
At Heritage Cottage Crafts, turning yesterday's silverware into something new is what we do.

*Don't ask, "What is this?" Ask, "What else could this be?"*
Note: Vintage knife-handle solder may contain lead or other metals. Its composition should be verified before reuse, and melting requires appropriate ventilation and safety precautions.
