First Time Hearing Lou Reed – Walk on the Wild Side | Classical Musicians React

In this episode of P³, we react to and analyze Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side,” from his landmark 1972 album Transformer. Produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, the recording is remarkably sparse yet instantly recognizable—from Herbie Flowers’ famous doubled bass line and Lou Reed’s conversational vocal delivery to the “doo do doo” backing vocals and Ronnie Ross’s baritone saxophone solo. But there’s another fascinating layer to the song: the characters Reed introduces weren't simply fictional creations. Several were real figures associated with Andy Warhol’s Factory and the New York underground scene Reed knew. As two classical musicians, we explore how rhythm, timbre, phrasing, repetition, production, and restraint can turn an incredibly economical arrangement into one of the most distinctive recordings of the 1970s.
