Time will move along, it always does, And life will rearrange the two of us. You'll find a city underneath your feet, I'll find another where our roads don't meet. You'll have a doorway and a balcony, A different sky above your evening tea. We'll build a life that looks just right, But not the one we dreamed of that night. We'll laugh and travel, take pictures in the sun, And learn to live with what we've both become. But in a box of old forgotten things, A paper napkin holds our vanished dreams. Do you remember that old café? The rain outside, the words we couldn't say? We drew a future on a paper square, And swore that we'd forever meet each other there. You'll have someone waiting when you get home, I'll have someone so I'm not alone. Two good hearts, two lives that fit just right, But not the ones we pictured that night. This love will never fade, Though all the plans we made Lie somewhere in the years we left behind. We'll learn to let things be, You'll live your life, I'll live mine, free, But something of your heart will stay with mine. And if the years should take us far away, There's one thing time can never change: We were real, we were true, I was once at home with you. And this love will never fade. One day your name will cross a stranger's lips, And something in my heartbeat briefly slips. I'll take a breath, smile and carry on, As if that little moment never came along. Perhaps my picture finds its way to you, An old familiar face you once knew. You'll smile a smile that no one understands, Then put your phone away and take their hand. Perhaps we'll meet upon a crowded street, With strangers rushing past our tired feet. Our eyes will meet, and suddenly we'll know How many years have passed since letting go. We'll recognize each other in a glance, Two hearts that never got the promised chance. We'll see the roads that took us far apart, And all the scars we've carried in our hearts. Perhaps we'll share a simple smile, As if we'd never been apart a while. I don't need you to come back to me. I don't need life to change what it must be. I don't need promises we cannot keep, Or old regrets that steal the hours of sleep. I only need to know, somewhere inside, That what we had was never just a lie. We didn't fail because we said goodbye. Some loves are true, even when they don't survive. Not every love is meant to be returned. This love will never fade, Not even in the shade Of all the different lives we'll come to know. We may be miles apart, With different names upon our hearts, But there are things no distance can outgrow. And if one day we meet along the way, I'll be glad we had those years, come what may. We were real, we were true, There was nothing false in you. And I'll always be grateful that I knew... This love will never fade. Somewhere, on a napkin, Our young dreams still remain. Not because we lived them, But because we dreamed them just the same. We were real. We were true. This love will never fade.
