Discover Kossdalssvingane, one of Norway’s most unusual historic hiking roads, hidden in the beautiful Kossdalen Valley on Osterøy Island. The walk begins in Hosanger, approximately 49 kilometres and about 50 minutes by car from Bergen. From the starting point near Mjøsvågen, the sign shows around 2.5 kilometres to the famous hairpin bends. Kossdalssvingane was built in the late 1800s and once connected Hosanger with farms further inland. The most impressive section climbs approximately 175 metres through 17 narrow hairpin bends. This steep section of the old road is around 400 metres long, with an average gradient of approximately 27%. Today, the road is closed to cars and preserved as an important cultural and historical landmark. Cross the Osterøy Bridge and follow road 556 towards Lonevåg. From Lonevåg, continue on road 557 towards Hosanger. Follow the signs towards Mjøsvågen, Kossdalsvegen and Kossdalssvingane. The drive from central Bergen normally takes around 50 minutes. PARKING The designated public parking area is beside Hosanger Church — Hosanger kyrkje. From the church, it takes approximately 15 minutes to walk to the trail entrance near Hosanger Montessori School. Parking at Hosanger Montessori School is limited and should only be used outside school hours and during school holidays. Parking at Mjøs Metall is also permitted after 4:00 PM and on weekends.
