Watch Paris grow in 4K from a Celtic island town to a metropolis of 11 million people – 2,300 years of history in under 9 minutes, as a 3D timelapse of Celtic, Roman, medieval, royal, revolutionary and modern Paris. From the Parisii on the Île de la Cité to Roman Lutetia, the Viking siege, Notre-Dame, the Bastille, Haussmann's boulevards and the Eiffel Tower: year by year, the city grows on the real terrain of the Seine valley. The Romans build a new town on the left bank with a forum, baths, an arena and an aqueduct; in the late 3rd century it shrinks behind a wall on the island. Clovis makes Paris the capital of the Franks in 508, and in 885 Count Odo holds the island against hundreds of Viking ships. Notre-Dame rises from 1163, Philip Augustus builds the first great wall, and by 1328 Paris is the largest city in Christian Europe. Charles V's new wall and the Bastille follow; Joan of Arc fails at the Saint-Honoré gate in 1429. After St Bartholomew's Day in 1572, Louis XIV turns the old walls into boulevards. In 1789 Parisians storm the Bastille; Napoleon is crowned in Notre-Dame in 1804, and in 1814 the allied armies take the city. A last great rampart rises in the 1840s, Baron Haussmann cuts wide boulevards through the medieval streets, and in 1860 Paris grows to 20 districts. Then come the siege of 1870, the Commune and the burning of the Tuileries, the Eiffel Tower for the World's Fair of 1889, the Great Flood of 1910, occupation and liberation, La Défense, the Périphérique – and in 2019 the fire in Notre-Dame, which reopens in 2024. At the end, Roman Lutetia and medieval Paris appear once more inside today's city – and show what still stands. No AI imagery: Paris is reconstructed year by year on the real terrain, based on historical and archaeological research. Early buildings are reconstructions, and population figures before the first French censuses are estimates.
