Welcome to the Rag Yaman sitar lesson series! Here in lesson # 30, we'll continue learning the alap for raga yaman. We are now in the final section of alap called the antara. What is alap? Alap is the very first unfolding of the raga in performance and development. It’s a very reflective and meditative form that has no metric meter or pulse. The alap is fully improvised but it still follows a structure. The reason that we are working on the alap last is because in many ways it is the most challenging part of this music. To play alap you must have a confident, commanding understanding of the raga to be capable of elaborating solely on the melody. An alap can be anywhere for 10 minutes to one hour, depending on the performer's capacity and mood. Traditionally, alap is not notated and is taught in a back and forth style from teacher to student. In this lesson, we focus on the alap vistar with the note Ni as our main theme. Enjoy!
