G Herbo Addresses Why His Own Friends Say He Left the Hood & Forgot About Them! | Its Up There

G Herbo opens up about friends accusing him of leaving the hood, forgetting where he came from and no longer bailing people out — and explains why getting both feet out of the streets became a survival decision. Big Loon asks Herb how he was able to change a mentality shaped by growing up in Chicago. Herb says the answer came from accepting something he had seen too many times: If he continued living with one foot in the streets and one foot in his successful career, eventually the consequences could catch up with him. He says both feet had to come out. That decision did not come without conflict. Herb says people around him accused him of leaving the hood, forgetting where he came from, not taking care of people anymore and no longer being the person expected to handle bail money and funerals whenever something happened. Instead of denying that his behavior changed, Herb explains why it had to. He describes the mental and emotional toll of constantly feeling responsible for problems back home and the danger of being viewed as the successful person financing or organizing situations he may have no actual involvement in. Loon pushes the conversation further, arguing that success creates a strange obligation for rappers who come from the streets. A person may have enough money to help everyone around him financially, but continually solving the same problems can keep him spiritually, emotionally and legally tied to the same environment he supposedly escaped. Herb says he eventually had to go “cold turkey.” He talks about friends who continued returning to blocks where police pressure was high, carrying guns because they feared for their own safety and repeatedly ending up back in jail. Th e difference between helping a community and continuing to fund destructive cycles.
