Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Fort McMurray Thursday, to announce “the Government of Canada is officially listing the West Coast Pipeline, now known as Pacific Link as a project of national interest” — just three months after the Alberta government submitted the proposal. Carney says bringing an additional million barrels a day from the Alberta oil sands and the west coast, will let the world see Canada as a trusted energy supplier. “A pipeline to the West Coast is part of our mission to transform our economy, to double our non-U.S. exports over the next decade, to create tens, in fact hundreds of thousands of good jobs,” the prime minister added. As Heather Yourex-West explains, not everyone is happy with the plan. Pacific Link is the first project to receive the national interest designation under the ‘Building Canada Act,' with Prime Minister Mark Carney making the announcement in Fort McMurray Thursday. Despite the announcement’s fanfare, there are still major concerns surrounding the fast-tracking of the project. Sarah MacDonald reports on the delicate balance between economic and environmental interests. U.S. President Donald Trump claims Iran may also be linked to the FlyDubai copilot accused of trying to crash an Israel-bound plane. The United States is investigating the incident, as is Saudi Arabia — the country where Flight FZ1073, which was carrying at least 170 people — made an emergency landing on Wednesday. As Redmond Shannon reports, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the copilot had been “radicalized.” Tennessee’s first execution of a female prisoner in 200 years has gone terribly wrong. Christa Pike is in critical condition in hospital, after not one, but two failed attempts to kill her by lethal injection of pentobarbital. Eric Sorensen reports. Plus, two years after being released from a Russian prison, a Wall Street Journal reporter has a new book, recounting the panic and fear he faced. Evan Gershkovich was arrested by Russia’s security agency on trumped-up espionage charges. He spent nearly 500 days behind bars before the prisoner-swap that secured his release — and simultaneously freed a Russian hit man. Global’s Mike Armstrong spoke to Gershkovich about his harrowing experience. For more info, please go to https://globalnews.ca/news/12083562/w...
