Why does this knight seem unafraid of Death and the Devil?
In 1513, Albrecht Dürer created one of the most extraordinary engravings of the Northern Renaissance: *Knight, Death and the Devil*.
An armoured rider travels through a dark, forbidding landscape. Death holds up an hourglass. The Devil lurks behind him. Yet the knight continues forward, seemingly indifferent to the dangers surrounding him.
What does this mysterious image really mean?
In this episode of 5 Minutes With Art, we explore the engraving's remarkable details, hidden symbolism and competing interpretations — from the steadfast Christian knight to a much darker possibility.
We also discover how Dürer achieved astonishing detail with nothing more than a burin, a copper plate and extraordinary technical skill.
But beyond its historical meaning, this artwork raises a question that still resonates today:
How do we keep going when life confronts us with loss, uncertainty and fears we cannot simply overcome?
The darkness is still there. And yet the journey continues.
