Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance - Episode 7 - Base Infiltration

Today I learned a valuable lesson on Kentarus IV: do not shoot a Mech before it powers up if you want the salvage! The mission sounded straightforward enough. We needed to capture a Steiner base by eliminating the defenses and anything else that could shoot back. Before we could take the base, though, communications had to be dealt with. The comm tower at Navpoint Alpha was our first priority. Destroying it would prevent Steiner reinforcements from being called in and give us a much better chance of taking the base. For this operation, I took the Cougar, a fast Clan light Mech equipped for long-range combat. The main weapons were dual ER Large Lasers and dual LRM 10 launchers, giving me plenty of reach while keeping me away from the worst of the fighting. When the heat started climbing, I could fall back on the medium and small lasers rather than cooking the Mech. Following the navigation points toward Epsilon, we encountered Steiner scouts, helicopters and defensive turrets. I decided to deal with as much as possible from range. There was no point risking the Mechs we wanted to preserve for the main engagement. Jen was piloting the Hellspawn, bringing the shorter-range firepower while I concentrated on long-range support. Eventually we reached the enemy positions and the real fight began. The first Steiner lance consisted of a Catapult and Cougar, followed by another Hellspawn and Cougar. By the end of the engagement, my Cougar was barely holding together, but the mission was successful. And then came the important part: salvage. After what I learned earlier, I am going to have to be much more careful about which Mechs I destroy and when. The parts we recovered should allow me to improve the Hellspawn and start giving them some better ballistic weapons. The campaign on Kentarus IV is starting to get serious. We have captured another piece of ground, but Steiner is not going to simply hand over the planet.
