The King Beyond the Water
Step into the mist of the 18th-century Scottish Highlands with an original anthem of rebellion, loyalty, and the Jacobite rising. "The King Beyond the Water" channels the spirit of the clans who marched through the freezing heather, armed with borrowed blades, empty pockets, and an unbroken oath to the exiled Stuarts.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
On the braes before dawn,
I tied my heel and bone.
The frost sat white on heather,
and the hills knew my name.
My mamma kissed my brow,
said, "Son, come hame, come hame."
But the road was in my blood,
and the bagpipe called me on.
[Pre-Chorus]
Hear the leave-taking word,
hear the riders in the dark.
Every step toward the glen
beats a hammer in my heart.
We will answer, one and all,
when the fire climbs the spark.
[Chorus]
For the king beyond the water,
for the blood and for the land.
We will rise, we will rise,
with a sword in every hand.
For the king beyond the water,
let the cold north hear us call.
Hold the line, hold the line,
we will not kneel at all.
[Verse 2]
At the ford by the ash,
we passed a borrowed blade.
Old men with weathered faces,
young lads in a raid.
A torn red ribbon on a staff,
a tartan in the rain.
No silver in our pockets,
only faith and plenty pain.
[Pre-Chorus]
Hear the leave-taking word,
hear the riders in the dark.
Every step toward the glen
beats a hammer in my heart.
We will answer, one and all,
when the fire climbs the spark.
[Chorus]
For the king beyond the water,
for the blood and for the land.
We will rise, we will rise,
with a sword in every hand.
For the king beyond the water,
let the cold north hear us call.
Hold the line, hold the line,
we will not kneel at all.
[Bridge]
If I fall on the moorland,
bury me where the heather bends.
Tell my brother to keep on,
tell my true love I was sent.
Not by gold, not by comfort,
but by ash and oath and tide—
and the hope of a homecoming
when the broken crown is mended right.
[Final Chorus]
For the king beyond the water,
for the blood and for the land.
We will rise, we will rise,
with a sword in every hand.
For the king beyond the water,
let the cold north hear us call.
Hold the line, hold the line,
we will not kneel at all.
[Outro]
The braes call,
the braes call.
Hold the line,
we will not kneel at all.
