What actually happens during a chiropractic adjustment? Is it really just someone “popping your back”?
In this video, Dr. Andrew Newell of Full Life Chiropractic in Austin, Texas, breaks down what happens during a chiropractic adjustment and why spinal movement matters.
Many people have an idea of chiropractic adjustments based on videos they’ve seen on TikTok or Instagram—or from a friend saying, “They just pop your back.” But there’s much more happening during a precise chiropractic adjustment.
Dr. Newell discusses how the joints of the spine are designed to move and what can happen when certain joints aren’t moving optimally. He also explains research published in The Spine Journal that examined whether the joints in the lower back actually move during a chiropractic adjustment.
Using imaging before and after a lumbar adjustment, researchers evaluated movement of the lumbar zygapophyseal joints, also known as facet joints or Z-joints. The study found that the chiropractic adjustment produced greater movement in these joints compared with the other movements and stretching techniques evaluated.
Dr. Newell explains why restoring motion to restricted spinal joints may be important for reducing mechanical stress, improving joint mobility, and helping restore more normal movement.
He also explains how these concepts connect with the approach at Full Life Chiropractic in Austin. While Full Life Chiropractic offers the Blair Technique, their approach also considers the entire spine because you are more than an isolated spinal segment—you’re a whole person.
At Full Life Chiropractic, adjustments are designed to be gentle, precise, and measured, with the goal of helping you regain movement, function, and comfort in your spine and everyday life.
Dr. Newell also discusses the relationship between the spine and the nervous system and why chiropractic care has long focused on the importance of healthy spinal movement and function.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens during a chiropractic adjustment, whether chiropractors actually move the spine, why your joints may feel restricted, or how spinal movement relates to your overall function, this video is for you.
