Come spend a Labor Day morning with me in my gardens by the lake as I collect flower seeds, save zinnia seeds for next year, visit with the hummingbirds and share a few special memories along the way. 🌸🌿
Remember those vinca seeds I showed you how to collect the other morning? Well, they’re certainly accumulating! I show you the container where I’ve been tossing them as I collect them, and it’s amazing how many seeds these beautiful little plants can produce.
There’s something about sitting and gathering all those seeds that brings back such sweet memories of my grandmothers. We weren’t collecting flower seeds together, but the simple process reminds me of sitting with them shelling peas or snapping beans. I love how something so ordinary can suddenly take you right back to another time and to people you love.
Then we move on to the zinnias. I show you how I collect and save seeds from several different varieties so I can grow them again next year, and we’ll wander through my zinnia gardens in both the front and backyard. You’ll also see some of the cosmos, echinacea, crape myrtles and other plants that have made the gardens so beautiful this summer.
I also share an important word of caution about handling zinnias and other plants. About 30 years ago, when I was a young gardener, I had a frightening allergic reaction while working with dried zinnia flower heads. Some plants can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in certain people, and pollen, plant material and fungi can also be potential irritants. It’s something I think gardeners should be aware of, particularly when we’re handling dried flowers and collecting seeds.
And, of course, it’s Labor Day on the lake! You’ll hear some of the activity out on the water, a sweet little Carolina wren, and my hummingbirds busily feeding on the salvia. ❤️
For me, gardening is about so much more than growing flowers. It’s about memories, family, nature and appreciating the simple things that make an ordinary morning special.
If you enjoy gardening, seed saving, DIY projects, wildlife and creating beautiful things, I hope you’ll subscribe and join me for more here at Gayle Forster Designs. 🌿💕
