Ernest Shackleton set out to cross Antarctica, but his expedition never even reached the starting point. In January 1915, his ship, Endurance, became trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea. What began as an ambitious journey across an unexplored continent slowly became a struggle to bring his men home. For months, the 28 men lived aboard a ship they could no longer steer. When the crushing ice finally destroyed Endurance, they had to make a new home on drifting floes, carrying their supplies and lifeboats across a frozen landscape that was constantly changing beneath them. And that was only the beginning of their journey back. Shackleton and his crew eventually reached the remote shores of Elephant Island, but there was no settlement, no reliable source of supplies, and little chance of a passing ship. Their only hope was a remarkable voyage across the Southern Ocean in the James Caird, a small lifeboat carrying six men toward South Georgia, roughly 800 nautical miles away. The story follows that dangerous crossing, the journey over South Georgia's mountains, and the repeated attempts to reach the 22 men left behind under Frank Wild's command. It also explores the often-overlooked Ross Sea party, whose task was to lay supplies for the planned Antarctic crossing and whose members faced a very different ordeal. Along the way, we get to know the people behind the famous expedition: Captain Frank Worsley, Tom Crean, Frank Wild, Harry McNish, and the many others whose practical skills and daily work helped keep their companions alive. This is the story of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917, from its ambitious beginnings to the final rescue efforts. It's a journey through the Antarctic winter, shifting sea ice, small boats, difficult decisions, and the extraordinary distances separating people who depended on one another. Settle in and follow the expedition at a gentle, unhurried pace, with time to understand the places, the people, and the choices that shaped one of the most remarkable survival stories in the history of exploration.
