In this video, I’m sharing how I explored sensorless Field-Oriented Control (FOC) using the Sliding Mode Observer (SMO).
The idea is simple, instead of using an encoder or Hall sensor, we estimate the rotor position just from the motor’s voltage and current. I’ll walk through how the observer works, how it reconstructs back-EMF, and how we can extract the rotor angle from it.
It’s not a formal explanation, just my way of understanding how SMO behaves and why it’s such a popular method for sensorless FOC.
