5pm (08/29) Tropical Update from US National Weather Service Mobile Alabama: Conditions will continue to deteriorate with the worst conditions expected tonight through tomorrow as persistent rainbands move across the area. ⚠️ Significant impacts are expected to continue across much of our area overnight and into Monday. Here's a quick breakdown of the impacts for our local area... NOTE: MONDAY MORNING RUSH HOUR WILL BE VERY ROUGH. PLAN AHEAD FOR ROUGH CONDITIONS IF YOU MUST DRIVE. ☔ FLASH FLOODING: We are concerned about the flash flood potential overnight through Monday. A SIGNIFICANT THREAT FOR FLASH FLOODING will unfold overnight into Monday. ️Heavy rain will lead to widespread flash flooding with potentially significant river flooding across southeast MS and southwest AL. Based on the latest guidance, we increased the rainfall totals across parts of the area. 8-12 inches of rain is possible across southeast Mississippi with isolated amounts up to 18 inches; 5-10 inches is possible across coastal Alabama and northwest Florida with isolated amounts up to 15 inches; 3-8 inches is possible over inland southwest and south-central Alabama. Some rainbands will linger into Tuesday, but rain will not be as widespread. 🌊 STORM SURGE/COASTAL FLOOD: Expecting a LONG DURATION event lasting 2 more high tide cycles. Peak water levels occur tonight into Monday morning. Peak storm surge forecast for coastal Alabama is 3-5 feet inundation above normally dry ground. Minor coastal flooding is expected further east into the western Florida panhandle with 1-3 feet inundation above normally dry ground. 🌊 SURF/RIP CURRENTS: High risk of rip currents will PERSIST THROUGH mid-week, if not longer. High surf will persist through early next week. Surf heights did increase on this latest forecast again. Expect breaker heights of 10-15 ft through tonight with a slow drop to only 7-9 feet across northwest Florida and 9-11 feet across coastal Alabama on Monday. By Tuesday, surf will gradually fall to 5-7 feet. 🌬️ WIND: Tropical storm force winds, especially in gusts, will persist into Monday across southeast Mississippi and coastal Alabama.
