We may see someone fall into sin, but we do not see the hidden struggle of the heart, the repentance that may follow, or the mercy through which God may transform that person. “You saw a person sin against his neighbor. But did you see it when he repented?” For Saint Gabriel, refusing to condemn did not mean becoming indifferent to sin. He clearly distinguished between correcting what is wrong and condemning the person who has fallen. Christian correction seeks repentance and salvation, while condemnation grows from pride and places us above our neighbor. His own life repeatedly demonstrated this teaching. Many misunderstood his behavior as a Fool-for-Christ and judged what they saw from outward appearances. Through these encounters, Saint Gabriel revealed how little we truly know about another person’s spiritual condition—and how easily we forget our own weakness before God. The Christian is therefore called not to excuse evil, but to approach the fallen with humility, discernment, compassion, and prayer, remembering that God alone knows the full story of every soul.
