In this video, I’m bringing together three very different aquariums and three completely different approaches to aquascaping. From an aquarium without any aquatic plants, to a dramatic Penjing-inspired landscape, and finally a densely planted Nano Ryuboku that I followed for an entire year. HARDSCAPE ONLY Can you create a beautiful aquarium without using a single aquatic plant? For this setup, I wanted to explore exactly that. Instead of relying on plants, the entire composition is built around wood, rocks, substrate and negative space. It’s a very different approach to a traditional planted aquascape and puts much more emphasis on the hardscape itself. NANO RYUBOKU The smallest aquarium of the three – but also the one I followed for the longest. This Nano Ryuboku uses wood as the main structural element, surrounded by dense aquatic planting to create a lush, mature underwater landscape. In the tutorial, I show the complete creation of the aquascape as well as how it developed over 365 days, including the transformation from a freshly planted aquarium into the final mature layout. PENJING STYLE This aquascape takes inspiration from traditional Chinese Penjing landscapes, recreating the feeling of a much larger mountainous landscape inside an aquarium. The composition is built around several dramatic rock formations covered in greenery, creating small islands and peaks with a strong sense of scale and depth. The aquarium was designed specifically as a home for Pea Puffers, combining aquascaping with the requirements of these fascinating little fish.
