Patrick O'Sullivan - Am I right my friend? (Irish Brigade charging Marye's Heights)

During the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Irish Brigade was engaged in the tragic assault on Marye's Heights. In that battle 114,000 union troops attacked fortified entrenched confederate troops numbering only 72000. It is remembered as perhaps one of the most one-sided battles of the war. Union casualties were more than twice as heavy as those suffered by the Confederates. This was due to futile frontal attacks by the Union army, hurling their troops against a feature of the battlefield that came to be remembered as the 'sunken wall' on the heights overlooking the city. The Irish brigade was ordered into the fray with 1200 men, but suffered a staggering 545 casualties. Perhaps an irish life wasn't that valuable to the union officers? The flag depicted in the image is "Tiffany" flag, representing irish born union troops. Only the 28th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment actually had a green flag that day, because the others were under repair. In fact they put pinned green boxwood sprigs to their caps to mark their Irish identity. The song was inspired by the fact that on the top of the hill in the confederate ranks was Phillips' Legion with Lochrane Guards who were also irish.
