Mia has one month to turn two shoeboxes of her grandparents' photographs into a gift: a few pictures enlarged and framed for her grandfather's 85th birthday. The problem is that the only person alive who can identify anyone in them is her grandmother — and on Tuesday the man in the middle of one photo is 老张, while on Thursday he is 小李, an old neighbour. Along the way, a coat gets a ten-minute biography while the person wearing it stays anonymous, her grandparents spend an evening arguing over whether a building fifty years ago was a hospital, and a photo of Mia's mother at twenty — laughing, cigarette in hand — quietly ends up in Mia's bag, unmentioned for now. The birthday boy, meanwhile, has requested a fruit basket instead.
