South Korea has almost no flat land left, so its engineers build new land from the sea floor up. In this video, we walk through the full engineering process of building an artificial island for a mega port, step by step. You'll see how engineers survey the seabed with sonar, drill core samples, strengthen soft clay with vertical drains and sand compaction piles, and dredge millions of cubic meters of sand. Then we cover how the rock seawall is built, how giant concrete caissons are mixed, cast, floated, towed, and sunk into place, and how the island is filled, compacted, and left to settle. Finally, we look at the quay walls, container yards, cranes, environmental protection, and how long the island is designed to last.
