This unforgettable Scottish Highlands road trip begins at Craighouse Gardens in Edinburgh (EH10 5TZ) and covers more than 370 miles of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes. The journey starts by navigating through Colinton Road, Craiglockhart Avenue, Longstone Road, and Calder Road (A71) before joining the M8 heading west.
From the M8, the route continues north via the M9, passing Stirling and following signs toward Doune. The drive transitions onto the A84 and A85, taking you deep into the heart of the Highlands. This stretch includes dramatic scenery, rolling hills, and classic Highland vistas before reaching Fort William, one of Scotland’s most famous outdoor towns.
Leaving Fort William, the route follows the A82, then turns onto the A86, crossing remote glens and lochs. The journey continues along General Wade’s Military Road (A889) and connects to the A9, offering sweeping views of the Cairngorms.
From the A9, the drive heads toward Kinloch Rannoch, following the B847 and B846 to reach the peaceful shores of Loch Rannoch and the Loch Rannoch Highland Club — a highlight of the trip with serene water views and mountain backdrops.
The return journey heads east again via the A9, continuing toward Dundee through the M90, A90, and Perth Road, passing through the city centre and reconnecting with the A92. The route then travels through Kirkcaldy, Kincardine Bridge, and Falkirk, before rejoining the M9 and M8 toward Edinburgh.
The final stretch follows the City of Edinburgh Bypass (A720), turning onto A702, Greenbank Drive, Morningside Grove, and Morningside Drive, before returning to Craighouse Gardens, completing a full scenic loop of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes.
This route showcases everything from urban Edinburgh streets to Highland mountains, deep glens, remote lochs, historic military roads, and coastal crossings — a complete Scottish driving adventure.
