Before we built businesses together, raised a family, shared accounts, and created the life we have today, we were two young people trying to figure out money, responsibility, marriage, and what we actually owed each other. And we definitely did not have it figured out. In this episode of Love & Business, we go back more than 20 years to when we bought our first house together. Carla remembers sitting at the kitchen table while AZ broke down exactly how much she owed every month. Half the bills. Half the furniture. Half of a painting. Even when Carla needed gas money after working extra hours to pay for her portion, AZ was not exactly opening his wallet. His reasoning at the time was simple. Why should I pay your bills? You are not my wife. That one conversation became part of a much bigger lesson for both of us. Carla realized she needed to be able to stand on her own two feet and make her own money. AZ eventually realized that being a husband, father, provider, and business owner required him to grow into responsibilities he did not fully understand when he was younger. Over the years, everything changed. Separate finances became shared finances. His business became our family business. Our responsibilities became different, but our commitment became the same. And that brings us to the real question behind this episode. Does a successful marriage actually need to be 50/50? We do not believe every responsibility has to be divided perfectly down the middle. There have been seasons where one of us carried more of the business. There have been seasons where one of us carried more of the family. There have been times when Carla stepped into the business and helped clean up financial problems, debt, systems, lawsuits, and responsibilities AZ could not handle alone. There have also been areas of our family and life where Carla carried responsibilities AZ was never as involved in. The percentages were not always equal. The commitment was. That is what we had to learn. Marriage changes. Money changes. Roles change. Businesses change. Children change everything. The person you married changes. You either continue learning how to operate together or eventually you can start growing in completely different directions. We also talk about money pressure, financial independence, joint versus separate accounts, traditional roles, building a family business, poor communication, growing together, and what commitment actually looks like after more than two decades together. Love & Business is our real conversation about marriage, family, entrepreneurship, money, personal growth, and everything we have learned while building a life and businesses together. Subscribe and join us as we continue having the conversations couples are usually having behind closed doors. #LoveAndBusiness #Marriage #Money
