Continuing my 4-night, 5-day road trip around Hokkaido, Japan.
On the way from Roadside Station Shiranuka Koitokan toward Lake Mashu Onsen, I stopped at the Onnenai Visitor Center in Kushiro Wetland.
The visitor center provides access to a well-maintained wooden boardwalk through the wetland, allowing visitors to experience Kushiro Wetland on foot.
There are free coin lockers at the visitor center, so you can leave your luggage behind and enjoy the walk hands-free.
There isn’t a spectacular viewpoint or a famous attraction here. Instead, the peaceful atmosphere of walking through the wetland was what I enjoyed most.
I saw an Ezo deer, Ezo monkshood, and umebachisou (grass of Parnassus) along the way.
Volunteers were also available around the visitor center to explain the formation and natural environment of Kushiro Wetland.
Apparently, you may even be lucky enough to see a Japanese crane here.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky this time. 😂
If you’d like to experience Kushiro Wetland on foot, this is a great place for a quiet and relaxing walk.
No music, just the natural sounds of driving and walking.
