St. Luke: The Doctor Who Wrote a Gospel Without Ever Meeting Jesus | Saint of the Day, October 18

The shepherds and the angels at Christmas, the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son: all of them come from one Gospel, and the man who wrote it never met Jesus. This is the story of St. Luke the Evangelist. Tradition says he came from Antioch in Syria; St. Paul calls him "the beloved physician." In the Acts of the Apostles the story suddenly switches from "they" to "we" as Luke joins Paul at Troas. He sailed with him to Philippi, followed him to Jerusalem, survived a fourteen-day storm and a shipwreck on Malta, and stayed with him in Rome when everyone else had gone: "Only Luke is with me." Like a careful historian he gathered what the eyewitnesses handed on and wrote an orderly account. Without him we would not have the Annunciation, the Magnificat, the boy Jesus in the Temple, Zacchaeus, the good thief, or the road to Emmaus. Later tradition made him the first painter of the Virgin Mary and the patron of artists and doctors. His relics rest today in Padua. A new Catholic saint every day.
