Why are growing numbers of Black Americans stepping away from traditional churches? The Black church has historically served as a place of worship, refuge, leadership, community organization, and resistance. Yet its relationship with the present generation is changing. Pew Research Center reports that 73% of Black adults now identify as Christian, down from 85% in 2007, while 22% identify with no organized religion.
