ショパン：エチュード Op.10-3「別れの曲」 ｜ Chopin: Étude Op.10 No.3 “Tristesse”

「別れの曲」という題名、実はショパンがつけたものではありません。 では、なぜ日本ではそう呼ばれるのでしょうか——。 《エチュード Op.10-3》は、1830年代初頭、ショパンがまだ20代前半のころに書いた作品です。 「エチュード」とは練習曲のこと。 しかしショパンは、指の訓練のために書かれてきた練習曲を、演奏会で聴くに値する芸術作品へと大きく発展させました。 この曲の冒頭に現れるのは、技巧を誇示するような華やかな音ではありません。 ゆっくりと歌う、美しく穏やかな旋律。 ショパンはこの作品に「別れ」という標題をつけてはいません。それでも日本では《別れの曲》という名前で広く親しまれるようになりました。 その大きなきっかけとなったのが、1930年代の映画です。ショパンを描いたドイツ映画が日本で《別れの曲》という邦題で公開され、この旋律と「別れ」のイメージが強く結びついていきました。 ところが、曲の中ほどまで進むと、穏やかな世界は一変します。 音楽は次第に激しさを増し、複雑な響きと情熱的な動きへ。 そして、その嵐が過ぎ去ると—— 最初の旋律が、再び静かに帰ってきます。 同じ旋律なのに、最初とは少し違って聞こえる。 一度失ったものを思い出すような、 遠く離れた場所を振り返るような。 「別れ」という名前をいったん忘れて聴いてみるのも、この曲の楽しみ方かもしれません。 あなたには、この旋律がどんな記憶に聞こえるでしょうか。 ─── The title “Tristesse” or “Farewell” was not actually given to this étude by Chopin himself. So why has the piece become so closely associated with parting and nostalgia? Chopin's Étude Op.10 No.3 was written when he was still in his early twenties. Although an étude is traditionally a study designed to develop technique, Chopin transformed the genre into music of remarkable poetic and emotional depth. The opening melody is quiet, lyrical and deeply expressive. As the music progresses, however, its peaceful character suddenly changes. The middle section grows increasingly passionate and technically demanding before the turbulence eventually subsides. Then the opening melody returns. The notes may be familiar, but after everything that has happened, they can seem somehow different. Perhaps that is one reason this music has become so strongly associated with memory, longing and farewell.
