Catching our first few giant lake trout in the last video was something we’ll never forget. Braving the elements in New York in the Winter isn’t necessarily the most fun thing in the world, but it affords you the opportunity at the fish you usually only get to dream about. And if you watched the last video you know Andrew kicked my butt from a fishing perspective and caught a few lake trout he literally couldn’t lift up out of the net. But in this video it’s my turn and it starts out on day 4 of our adventures, back on the river on the hunt for the largest char on earth.
And just like that I had my redemption. After 4 days of fishing I finally got the fish I was looking for. We kept fishing though, feeling like we had finally figured something out and that the next fish had to be right around the corner.
After my dramatic fall and the ever rising dirt to water ratio of the river we decided to bail. I know that fall didn’t look that dramatic but I surely would’ve hurt myself to some degree if I had actually fallen off that drop off face first into the rocks, which is what likely would’ve happened. Regardless we made our way to a totally new spot looking for lake run browns.
We had been fishing for close to an hour before we caught that fish, but as soon as I put back on a jig streamer it happened pretty quickly. It the same technique we had used the day prior when I caught that 25 inch brown, so for whatever reason it was just working.
Alright it’s story time. With 2 browns being caught in quick succession after 2 hours of fishing with almost nothing to show for it we were pretty thrilled. But we weren’t done there, because Andrew hooked yet another nice brown trout which was actually the biggest of the day. But just before he hooked it he took his shades off and laid them right in front of the gopro so the footage is awful. But that shouldn’t take away from this beautiful 24.5 inch brown trout. After that we left because it was getting dark and we wanted to get out of there because we didn’t want to be fumbling around in the dark in a totally unfamiliar place. The next morning we woke up and went to the river with the plan to chase more lake trout, but unfortunately the river was even dirtier than it had been the previous day when we left. So we decided to run back to some Erie tribs to fish for steelhead, hoping it would go better than it had a week prior, which was the first fihsmas video. Unfortunately it did not, we hopped from creek, to creek, to creek without so much as a single fish being spotted. Including in the creek we had caught the fish a week prior. It’s pretty much universally known at this point, but the steelhead run on Erie this year is abysmal. It wasn’t until the very end of the day, at the last spot of the day, that I somehow managed to find one very small steelhead. Which was such a shocking catch that neither one of us even believed it had happened. We thought that steelhead were a figment of our imagination at that point, so even holding one was crazy. And that’s how the trip ended, which was better than getting skunked but certainly wasn’t a high point. But overall I’d say our trip to the great lakes was incredible and one we won’t soon forget, which I feel like I say every trip but it’s always true. We’ve even considered making this one of our yearly trips, so if you guys enjoyed this 3 part series let us know! As always thanks for watching and I’ll catch you on the next fishmas video.
