₹81,000 Crore Great Nicobar Project | Strategic Masterstroke or Environmental Disaster?

The Great Nicobar Project is one of India's most ambitious infrastructure and strategic development projects. With an estimated cost of over ₹81,000 crore, the project includes a transshipment port, a dual-use international airport, a township, and a power plant on Great Nicobar Island. Supporters argue that the project will help India reduce dependence on foreign ports such as Colombo and strengthen India's position near the Malacca Strait, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes. Critics warn that the project could cause irreversible environmental damage, threaten the habitat of endangered leatherback turtles, and impact the indigenous Shompen tribe.
