Bomdila to Tawang 🏔️ | Markets, Monasteries, Local Crafts & Nechiphu Tunnel
Our Arunachal Pradesh journey continued through the beautiful mountain town of *Bomdila* — a place where Himalayan landscapes, Buddhist culture and traditional craftsmanship come together. 🏔️✨
We started by exploring **Bomdila Market**, the perfect place to experience the local vibe of the town. From local products and traditional items to small shops and colourful Himalayan surroundings, the market gives you a glimpse into everyday life in this beautiful part of Arunachal Pradesh. 🛍️🏔️
Next, we visited the peaceful and majestic **Bomdila Monastery**, also known as **Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling (GRL) Monastery**. Established in **1965**, it is an important centre of Mahayana Buddhist culture and is inspired by the Tsona Gontse Monastery of South Tibet. 🙏🏯
Perched high above Bomdila, the monastery sits at approximately **8,000 feet (2,400 m) above sea level**, offering beautiful views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
🎟️ *Bomdila Monastery Entry:* No regular entry fee is listed by the official tourism sources
🏔️ *Elevation:* Approximately 8,000 ft / 2,400 m
🙏 *Significance:* An important centre of Mahayana Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhist culture
Our next stop was the *Bomdila Craft Centre & Ethnographic Museum* — a wonderful place to discover the traditional art, culture and craftsmanship of Arunachal Pradesh. 🎨🧶
The centre showcases traditional **handwoven carpets, masks, wall hangings, scroll paintings, pottery and musical instruments**, giving visitors an insight into the diverse tribal heritage of the region. The famous dragon-design carpets are particularly fascinating.
🎟️ *Entry:* Check the local counter for the current ticket price
🎨 *Significance:* Preserves and showcases the traditional art, crafts and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh
And then came another fascinating part of the journey — the **Nechiphu Tunnel**! 🚗💨
Located on the *Balipara–Charduar–Tawang Road (BCT Road)* in West Kameng district, the Nechiphu Tunnel is a *500-metre-long, single-tube, double-lane tunnel* built at an elevation of approximately **5,700 feet**.
The tunnel bypasses the notoriously foggy Nechiphu Pass and provides **all-weather connectivity towards the Tawang region**. It is an important link between the lower areas of Arunachal Pradesh and the high-altitude **Tawang region**, making travel safer and more reliable.
🚇 *Nechiphu Tunnel:* 500 metres
🏔️ *Elevation:* 5,700 ft / 1,737 m
🛣️ *Route:* Balipara–Charduar–Tawang Road
📍 *Connects:* West Kameng region towards the Tawang region
From the lively streets of Bomdila Market to the peaceful monastery, traditional craftsmanship and finally the impressive Nechiphu Tunnel — this part of our Arunachal journey was a perfect combination of **culture, history, local life and Himalayan engineering**. 🏔️✨
