Your eyes are open. You feel fine. So why are a few seconds missing?
What if you stopped sleeping? Follow one ordinary person from a missed night into the science of microsleeps, memory lapses, sleep pressure, and distorted perception. The unsettling part: your ability to judge how well you're doing can be affected too.
We explore what non-REM and REM sleep do, how sleep loss can affect your appearance, and why ongoing short sleep matters for your heart, insulin response, and immune system. We also ask the difficult question: could sleep deprivation kill you, and can science give an honest human deadline?
The character's story is fictional. Reported symptom ranges vary between people; long-term health risks are not a timetable for one missed night. This episode does not establish a safe limit for staying awake or a universal human death countdown. Fatal familial insomnia is a separate prion disease, not what ordinary sleep loss turns into.
What Else Happens explores one change and the chain of consequences that follows.
