Charu Sinha is a highly distinguished Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1996 batch, belonging to the Telangana cadre. Renowned for her fearless leadership, compassion, and structural reforms, she made history as the first woman IPS officer to be appointed as the Inspector General (IG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the highly sensitive operational sectors of Jammu and Kashmir.
Currently, she serves as the Director General (DG) of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Telangana, while also overseeing the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and the Women Safety Wing.
Early Life and Education
Charu Sinha completed her schooling and initial education in Hyderabad.
Graduation: St. Francis College for Women, Hyderabad.
Post-Graduation: Master's degree in Political Science from the University of Hyderabad (1990–1992 batch).
Before joining the civil services, she was known to have a quiet, deeply spiritual, and academic demeanor. Her spiritual journey—specifically her dedication to Sathya Sai Baba and texts like the Autobiography of a Yogi—heavily influenced her outlook on life and governance, leading her to clear the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam and join the IPS in 1996.
Career and Major Postings
1. Initial Cadre & Anti-Extremist Operations (Andhra Pradesh / Telangana)
In her early career, she handled highly volatile internal security and law enforcement issues across undivided Andhra Pradesh:
Pulivendula & Eluru: Served as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), handling fierce factional feuds and communal issues.
Anti-Naxal Operations: As Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Medak and later as Superintendent of Police (SP) in districts like Mahbubnagar and Prakasam, she led heavily acclaimed counter-extremist operations.
Tribal Outreach: She worked extensively with the Chenchu tribes to educate them against supporting Naxalites, effectively clearing extremism out of Mahbubnagar.

Her expertise in conflict management earned her a selection for the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo, where she served on international police deputation, managing peacekeeping and institutional rehabilitation.
3. Making History in the CRPF (Bihar, Jammu, & Kashmir)
Charu Sinha’s career hit the national spotlight when she went on central deputation to the CRPF, ultimately becoming the first woman officer to command four different CRPF sectors:
Bihar Sector: Dealt heavily with Left-Wing Extremism (Naxalism), leading successful tactical operations from the frontlines.
Jammu Sector: Supervised crucial security setups along sensitive border zones.
Srinagar Sector (2020–2023): Appointed as the IG of the Srinagar Sector, a historic first for a female officer. She oversaw counter-terror operations in direct coordination with the Indian Army and J&K Police, leading the Valley Quick Action Team (QAT) through multiple high-stakes security operations.
4. Return to Telangana (2025–Present)
After finishing her central deputation as the IG of the CRPF Southern Sector, she returned to her home cadre:
In mid-2025, she was promoted and appointed as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), CID, Telangana.
She took additional charge of the Women Safety Wing, leading state programs like SHE Teams and the Bharosa Centres to protect women and children.
She serves as the Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Telangana.
Key Achievements and Innovations
The 'Love You Zindagi' (LYZ) Initiative
While heading operations in tense conflict zones (Bihar and Kashmir), Sinha noticed severe mental health strain and rising suicide rates among jawans.
She introduced "Love You Zindagi," a comprehensive psychological and stress-relief support program designed alongside experts.
The program successfully trained over 28,000 personnel, focusing on mental wellness, addressing depression, and shifting patriarchal dynamics at home, which drastically reduced suicide numbers across her sectors. It won her the prestigious FICCI Smart Policing Award in 2022.
Community & Child-Friendly Policing
Throughout her postings, she has been a vocal advocate for systemic compassion. She has worked to implement child-friendly police spaces under the POCSO Act and created gender-sensitization frameworks within the police force.
Awards and Recognitions
For her flawless, courageous, and clean track record, she has received India's highest policing honors:
Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2012)
Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2016)
President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2023)
