The Centre for Sustainability and Corporate Governance Research (CSCG), in collaboration with Beta - The Finance and Investments Club, organised a seminar titled “Public Asset Management in India: From Disinvestment to Value Creation for Every Shareholder” on Tuesday, 1st September 2026. The speaker for the seminar, Dr. Alok Pande, traced the evolution of Indian industry, beginning with state-controlled enterprises and businesses post-independence, declining efficiencies in the 1980s and 1990s, and liberalisation in the 1990s. This eventually led to the creation of the Department of Disinvestment in December 1999, renamed the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) in April 2016. At a time when privatisation was still considered an unpalatable word, Dr. Pande showed how disinvestment positively contributed to the growth and development of India's capital markets. Be it the disinvestment of Air India or the listing of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), Dr. Pande painted a vivid picture of India’s disinvestment journey.
